In response to Union Home Minister Amit Shah's announcement that the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) will be implemented before the upcoming Lok Sabha polls, All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) president Asaduddin Owaisi strongly expressed his opposition to the law, stating that it goes against the essence of India and is based solely on religion.

Owaisi emphasized that CAA, when considered alongside the National Population Register (NPR) and National Register of Citizens (NRC), is targeted at Muslims, Dalits, and the poor. He asserted that AIMIM has consistently been against CAA and will continue to oppose it.

Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Amit Shah defended the CAA, labeling it as a promise made by the Congress government during the country's partition. Shah insisted that the CAA, designed to provide Indian citizenship to persecuted non-Muslim migrants, will be notified and implemented before the polls.

He argued that the act aims to fulfill the commitment made to refugees by the Congress government during a period when minorities faced persecution in the countries formed after the partition. The CAA, passed in December 2019, has been a source of widespread protests across the nation.
